Description of significant Firefox 1.1 changes (from 1.0)

A significant amount of info was taken from Jesse Ruderman's excellent Firefox 1.1 changes listing.

Core Browser Improvements

The most significant changes between Firefox 1.0 and Firefox 1.1 are "under the hood". There has been more than a year of solid development and core enhancements to the core browser "engine" upon which Firefox is built.  Many improvements to the html, css and Javascript core components have been made. This gives many more tools to those building websites to work with Firefox.

FF1.1 Preferences Dialog

The biggest difference the browser user will notice between the 1.0 and 1.1 releases is the re-written Options Dialog (Tools>Options).  I have attached a screen shot of the differences.  Biggest changes are moving the icons to the top of the dialog, and the addition of tabs for additional options.

Several new features came with the options dialog re-write, including:

  • A "Sanitize Settings" option (and menu item)
    • Highly requested feature: allows you to easily and quickly remove browsing history, cookies, cache, saved form information, and other personal data
  • Searchable cookies which are sorted by site
  • A searchable download actions manager

Significant other fixes (with bug tracking numbers)

  • 274784 "Blazing fast" backward/forward buttons - still a few bugs
  • 231062 - Provide Firefox MSI package.
  • 291033 - Enable support for profile temp dir on local file system
    • Big improvement for networked environments.
  • 253950 - When the default profile is locked on startup, UI is less confusing.
  • 124561 - Anonymous ftp login failure should prompt for username/password.
  • 125998 - thumbnail of standalone image is used as icon for the tab.
  • 171349 - Mozilla Firefox Icon is Windowing System's Standard Icon (Win98/ME)
  • 69144 - Opening Internet Shortcuts (.url files) doesn't work

Improved Error page support - probably good enough to be enabled:
Update -- this has been enabled by default for Alpha2

  • 157004 - Error pages should be stored in history and show the original URL in the address bar.
  • 237244 - "Try Again" on XUL error pages does not repost form data. (Now that this bug and the previous bug are fixed, I recommend enabling error pages. To enable error pages, go to about:config and set browser.xul.error_pages.enabled to true.)

Re-write of the Extension Manager code

Little visible to the end user, but cleans up several issues with the extension manager and makes it MUCH easier for 3rd parties to integrate their extensions in Firefox.

New Graphics Technologies:  SVG and Canvas

SVG (which stands for Scalable Vector Graphics) is a powerful new graphics display technology.  Some sample sites are here:

Canvas is a bitmap drawing surface, suitable for many uses as well.  For more information see:  Drawing Graphics with Canvas
